PhD student Jun-Wei (Gary) Ding presented at the 13th International Platform on Ocean Energy for Young Researchers (IPOEYR 2026), hosted by the Institute of Ocean Energy, Saga University (IOES), Japan, on October 19–22, 2026. The organizers arranged his travel and accommodation.
His talk, “From Low Resolution to High Resolution: Deep Learning–Enhanced Wind Resource Assessment,” was given on October 21 in the offshore wind category, with Prof. I-Yun Lisa Hsieh as co-author. The work combines the robust large-scale structure of ERA5 reanalysis with the small-scale detail of the ICON model through a super-resolution network. Validated at 345 stations across Taiwan, it reduced wind-speed error by 6.9% relative to ERA5 (9.2% in lowland areas) and lowered the hourly power error at all six wind farms studied.
Over four days in Saga and Fukuoka, Jun-Wei joined talks by young researchers in wave, tidal, thermal and wind energy, visited the Institute’s Imari satellite laboratory, and toured a shipyard and a municipal waste treatment plant with carbon capture and utilization.
We are grateful to the IOES organizing committee for the invitation and warm hospitality.
